This year is probably the most excited I’ve been to watch the San Diego Charger pre-season games. Everyone’s coming back healthy and we’ve got a lot of talented young players fighting for spots. The games don’t count for much but it gives you a chance to see players have an opportunity to make plays you normally wouldn’t.
Unfortunately, San Diego let the seagulls get away with a 20-14 win Saturday in what was mostly a snoozer in the 1st half. LT and Rivers played the 1st two series of the game and looked fine. Gates looked like the Gates of ’06/ ’07 but Merriman seemed to look a bit hesitant. He’s probably just being extremely cautious not to get hurt during the preseason. Volek looked solid as our backup QB but on the flipside, Charlie Whitehurst had 3 turnovers including two int’s and a fumble in his first three drives.
Rookie WR Charly Martin was very impressive pulling down 5 receptions for 67 yards. Buster Davis also had a decent game snapping up 3 catches for 64 yards including one for 41 yards. If Chris Chambers continues to underachieve we have several good receivers hungry for a shot at the number 2 WR spot. Hopefully, Davis can stay healthy this season.
On defense we didn’t force any turnovers and held Seattle to 20 pts. Which is not terrible for our 1st preseason game but there’s a lot of room for improvement. We are so deep in the LB crew it’s sick. Jyles Tucker, Antwan Applewhite and recent additions of first round draft pick Larry English and Kevin Burnett from the Cowboys. Tucker, Applewhite and Burnett looked very good in Saturday’s game combining for 13 tackles.
The Bolts travel to Arizona to mix it up with the 2008 NFC Champs this Saturday at 7pm PST.
